INTRO:

There’s a warning when warlocks attack — a great black cloud forms on the horizon. And the smell, all rotting flesh and bad onions. But when witches show up, there is no warning at all. Not even matching, nondescript black sedans.
Fate threw her cap in the air with the rest of her class and watched the mass of blue and fluttering tassels fall around them. It was like looking through a dark rain, catching glimpses of something on the other side.
Something that made her stomach drop.
“What?”
Destiny grabbed a random cap out of the air and tossed it to Fate before she snatched another for herself. “What’s wrong with Mom?”
Fate swung back toward the crowd, mashing her cap back on her head and sliding the tassels to the opposite side. Her parents weren’t watching their children graduate, as they should. They were watching something behind them.
Quin appeared at Destiny’s elbow. “We have company.”
